The Malabon Concert Singers have won the 2nd Ken Steven International Choral Festival held in North Sumatra, Indonesia – a grand conclusion to its first Southeast Asian tour.
The Philippine choral group emerged as the winner of the Open Choir Category, besting 9 other bets from the host country in the competition held September 23–25, 2022.
Malabon Concert Singers’ Anthony Go Villanueva was also hailed the Best Conductor.

The Malabon City-based choir showcased their best form as they performed classic pieces and Gospel music. The singers also opened the gala presentations as they were the first to perform among the competing choirs.
On the third day of the festival, the choir added the folk song Ayug ti amianan (an excerpt from the scenes from the north) by Filipino arranger and conductor Prof. Fidel Calalang, Jr.
The Malabon Concert Singers previously won the 5th Biñan National Choral Competition and bagged the championship at the Virtual Christmas Choral Competition of the Soul Sounds Academy in Sri Lanka.
The Ken Steven International Choral Festival is named after global composer Ken Steven who hails from Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia. He is known for his fusion of Indonesian music with modern techniques and harmonies.
Filipino choral groups who have brought honor to the country by winning international awards include Cavite church choir Voci di Gesù Chamber Singers who won gold awards in Tokyo and Taipei and Coro Regina Coeli from the Holy Cross Parish of Noveleta which swept 12 choir awards in two separate choral competitions in Italy.
