Filipina Jiu-Jitsu athlete Annie Ramirez has qualified to compete in the 2022 World Games which will take place in Birmingham, Alabama, U.S.A.
The Jiu-Jitsu Federation of the Philippines announced that Ramirez earned a spot to the World Games, the country’s lone qualifier in Jiu-Jitsu in this year’s edition of the international tournament for sports not contested in the Olympics, scheduled to be held in July.
Ramirez, a 2019 Southeast Asian Games gold medalist, shared that she was surprised to qualify to the major quadrennial meet in Birmingham.
“With everything happening around the pandemic, I was not expecting this, but God is working all things for your good,” Ramirez said in a Facebook post on February 7, 2022.
“The World Games is like second to the Olympics in our sport and I am more than willing to represent once called upon. The preparation will still be different because of the covid protocol, but I can guarantee everyone that I will give it my all,” Ramirez added.
The Filipina ace also said she was seeking financial aid for her upcoming participation in the international event.
“I am also asking for financial aid to assist my journey in securing a victory in the upcoming tournament,” Ramirez wrote.
Ramirez previously took home medals at the Abu Dhabi World Masters Jiu-Jitsu Championship and in the London leg of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Jiu Jitsu World Tour.
Ramirez will compete against the world’s best for the gold medal in the 11th edition of the World Games in Birmingham, Alabama set to take place from July 7 to 17, 2022.
In January, the World Games named Phillip Delarmino as its first Filipino nominee for the Athlete of the Year award.
In 2017, Filipino cue artist Carlo Biado won the Philippines’ first gold medal in the World Games in Poland. Biado would later win the U.S. Open Pool Championship 2021, the 1st Philippine title win in 27 years since Efren Reyes.
