Filipino champion athletes Junna Tsukii and Jamie Lim led the Philippine karatekas medal harvest at the recently concluded Asian Karate Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
Karate Pilipinas team members harvested 2 silver medals and 4 bronzes in the continental tournament held at the Baluan Sholak Sports Palace in Kazakhstan.
Champion karatekas Junna Tsukii and Jamie Lim led the country’s delegation by winning a silver medal each after reaching the finals of their respective events.
Tsukii, currently ranked the world’s 4th best karateka from her previous career-high 2nd rank, made it to her first continental final with a 3-2 victory over Hawraa Al Ajmi of the United Arab Emirates.
The Filipino-Japanese karateka eventually bowed to hometown bet Moldir Zhangbyrbay of Kazakhstan, 9-5.
Filipina karateka’s gold-winning athlete Jamie Lim also fought for the gold in the final and eventually brought home the silver medal after besting the United Arab Emirates’ Sarah Alameri at 2-1.
Here are the Filipino players who brought home medals from the Asian Karate Championships in Kazakhstan held from December 18 to 22, 2021:
SILVER
- Junna Tsukii, senior female -50 kg kumite
- Jamie Lim, senior female -61kg kumite
BRONZE
- John Vasquez, U21 men’s individual kata
- Sakura Alforte, women’s -21 kata, women’s senior kata
- Remon Misu, women’s Under-21 61kgs of kumite
Team Philippines also reaped 19 golds and finished 2nd overall in the recently concluded Mombasa Open Tong-Il Moo-Do (TIMD) International Martial Arts Championship in Mombasa, Kenya.
