The Philippines’ Carlos Edriel Yulo has won his second World Gymnastics championship with a gold, silver, and a top 5 finish at the Fédération Internationale Gymnastique Artistic Gymnastics World Championships (FIG Worlds) in Japan.
Yulo claimed his second-straight title at the FIG Worlds with a gold-winning performance in the Men’s Vault Apparatus Final held in Kitakyushu on Sunday, October 24, 2021.
The 21-year-old Filipino gymnast again etched the Philippines into the prestigious FIG Worlds gold winners list following his first historic win in the FIG Worlds Floor Exercise event in 2019.
Yulo’s new victory led to the Philippines’ national anthem to be heard at the FIG Worlds only for the second time since the competition was established in 1903.
The Filipino national athlete from the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines delivered top-notch performances in three events at the 50th edition of the FIG Worlds which sent him to the finals of the vault, parallel bars, and on the floor exercise where he was the reigning champion.
Carlos Yulo delivered the highest average score of 14.916 to secure the gold against seven other competitors in the Men’s Vault Final.
The qualifiers actually had Yulo scoring 14.808 good for 3rd place in his vault subdivision, the same apparatus where he surprisingly finished in the finals at the Tokyo Olympics.
The Filipino Olympian afterward copped the silver in the Men’s Parallel Bars Final with a score of 15.300, sandwiched in between the two Chinese winners of the gold and bronze medals.
Yulo went into the finals as the top scorer in his subdivision with 15.566 in the Parallel Bars.
Yulo bounced back from a heartbreak earlier on Saturday when he defended his 2019 championship title in the floor exercise where he was also the top-scorer with 15.166 in the qualifiers.
The Filipino gymnast actually delivered the highest score of 14.866 in the event but a costly penalty of -0.30 after landing out of bounds denied him the title which was eventually won by Italy with a score of 14.800. Yulo placed 5th in the floor exercise final.
In 2018, Yulo delivered a bronze medal in the floor exercise of the FIG Worlds held in Doha, Qatar, a historic first medal for the Philippines.
Carlos Edriel Yulo now holds the distinction of owning all four medals for the Philippines in the FIG World Artistic Gymnastics
