University of the Philippines College of Music (CMu) Class of 2021 graduate Ryle Nicole Quillosa Custodio has won the top prize in the inaugural Composition Competition of the 2021 Busan Choral Festival & Competition (BCFC).
The UP website reported on August 6, 2021, that Custodio, a 4-time recipient of the UP Parangal sa Mag-aaral (2016, 2017, 2019, 2021), won for his composition “Tagu-Taguan” for Soprano-Alto-Tenor-Bass (SATB) a capella.
The Bachelor of Music in Composition graduate of UP Diliman won over 54 other entries from 28 countries for the 17th BCFC top prize.
Custodio’s work will be premiered on BCFC’s YouTube channel on October 23 during the 2021 Busan Choral Festival & Competition week as part of its prize, along with a $3,000 cash prize.
“The recording of this piece is already on the works, with the world-renowned UP Madrigal Singers and its director, Prof. Mark Anthony Carpio, set to sing my piece,” Custodio said in the UP report.
The Busan Choral Festival & Competition has been organized by the Korea Choral Institute since 2005 and is regarded as one of Asia’s top choral festivals.
The UP College of Music previously collaborated with the University of British Columbia for a laptop orchestra music concert.
The University of the Philippines is ranked in the Top 100 Performing Arts Schools on the QS World University Rankings.
