The Philippines’ Team Namikaze, composed of Filipino cosplay duo Jin Joson and Amado Carl “AC” Hernandez, made history by winning the Brother Award, the first major award won by the Philippines in the annual World Cosplay Summit (WCS) Championships in Japan.

Team Namikaze bagged one of the top honors awarded to country representatives with the best costume during the 19th edition of the largest cosplay festival in the world, held virtually from August 7 to 8, 2021.

Joson and Hernandez cosplayed as Jiraiya and Naruto from the Naruto franchise, competing with 30 other countries in the international cosplay event.

An established panel of judges led by esteemed Japanese voice actor Toru Furuya selected the best cosplayers in the event, won by this year’s Grand Champion Germany and runners-up Italy and the United Kingdom.

The World Cosplay Summit traditionally held in Nagoya, Japan was done through video skits submitted by 30 participating competing countries and 1 observer country in this year’s competition due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The WCS championship debuted in 2005 to promote the international exchange of Japanese culture, manga, and anime. It has been held annually since, with participants hailing from over 40 countries and across 6 continents.

Filipina actress Nadine Lustre pulled off the look of Filipino TEKKEN fighter “Josie Rizal” and managed to amaze the Japanese game’s director.
