The national postal service of Portugal has released special edition stamps commemorating the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines and the participation of the country in the first circumnavigation of the world 500 years ago.

Three Philippine-themed stamps depicting images that reflect the historical narrative of Portuguese-born navigator Ferdinand Magellan in the Philippine islands were launched by the Portuguese National Postal Office on July 2021.

The commemorative stamps feature the image of the Sto. Nino de Cebu, the iconic image of Magellan’s Cross in Cebu City, and the artwork of Filipino artist Bernardo A. Maac titled “Presentation of the Icon,” which won in the Quincentennial Art Competition of the Philippine National Quincentennial Committee.

The project was made possible through the tripartite collaboration of the CTT Correios de Portugal, the Estrutura de Missão para as Comemorações do V Centenário de Fernão de Magalhães (EMCFM), the Portuguese counterpart of the National Quincentennial Committee, and the Philippine Embassy in Lisbon.

The issuance of the stamps also coincides with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Portugal.

The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) earlier launched a commemorative postage stamp for the 500 year anniversary of the victory of Lapu-Lapu in the Battle of Mactan.
