Filipino-American professor and author Christine Bacareza Balance has been appointed to the advisory board of the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Victory Alliance, the first-ever think tank dedicated solely to Asian American issues.

Balance was among the experts from diverse backgrounds named to the advisory board in July to apply their substantive knowledge and passion in shaping policy goals and issues that benefit AAPI communities in the United States.

AAPI Victory Alliance’s advisory board members are professionals in various fields, from immigration to library science to media studies to climate change.

Balance is an Associate Professor of Performing & Media Arts, Asian American Studies, and the Southeast Asia Program (SEAP) at Cornell University.

Her writings on former Philippine First Lady Imelda Marcos, Asian American YouTube artists, Bruno Mars, Glee’s karaoke aesthetics, and spree killer Andrew Cunanan have been published in Women and Performance: a feminist journal, Journal of Asian American Studies (JAAS), Women’s Studies Quarterly (WSQ), and Theatre Journal.

She is a former board member of KulArts, a Bay Area-based traditional and contemporary Filipino arts organization, and one-eighth of the New York-based indie rock band The Jack Lords Orchestra.

The AAPI Victory Alliance works to empower Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States by providing education on progressive issues and creating and advocating for policies that affect AAPI communities.

Filipinos who are calling for a stop to anti-Asian discrimination related hate crimes all over the world include Broadway royalty Lea Salonga who will host the CollaborAzian virtual benefit concert to stop Asian American hate and NBA superstar Jordan Clarkson who recently restored a Filipino and Asian fusion food truck in Utah after it was spray-painted with anti-Asian and racist messages of hate.
