Weightlifter Elreen Ando qualifies as Philippines’ 11th athlete in Tokyo Olympics

Weightlifter Elreen Ann Ando has qualified as the Philippines’ 11th athlete bound for the Tokyo Olympics this July.

Ando qualified via the continental quota announced by the International Weightlifting Federation on June 12, 2021.

The Cebuana lifter qualified by being the top athlete for Asia in the women’s -64kg weight division of the IWF Absolute Ranking list.

Ando tallied with 2,634.93 points on the IWF ranking after winning two silvers and a bronze medal at the 2021 Asian Weightlifting Championships in Uzbekistan last April.

Ando joins fellow weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz who had earlier passed the world qualifiers for the women’s 55kg event.

Ando is the newest member of the Philippine delegation to the world quadrennial games, joining pole vaulter EJ Obiena, gymnast Carlos Yulo, boxers Eumir Marcial, Irish Magno, Nesthy Petecio, and Carlo Paalam, taekwondo jin Kurt Barbosa, rower Cris Nievarez, skater Margielyn Didal, and Hidilyn Diaz.
