Shooter Jayson Valdez is 12th Filipino athlete bound for Tokyo Olympics

Filipino shooter Jayson Valdez has qualified as the 12th member of the Philippine national delegation to the Tokyo Olympics which takes place in July.

Jayson Valdez, son of three-time Southeast Asian Games champion Julius Valdez, made it through the quota system by the Munich-based International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF).

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) announced Valdez’s Olympic qualification via Facebook on June 19, 2021.

“Congratulations Jayson Valdez for qualifying to the Tokyo Olympic Games! #GalingngAtletangPilipino.” the PSC wrote.

The 25-year-old athlete will compete in the men’s 10-meter rifle event and becomes the first Filipino shooter to qualify since Paul Rosario competed in the men’s skeet event at the 2012 London Olympics.

Twelve national athletes have punched tickets to the Tokyo Summer Games so far, including Valdez, boxers Nesthy Petecio, Carlo Paalam, Irish Magno, and Eumir Felix Marcial, pole vaulter EJ Obiena, gymnast Carlos Yulo, skateboarder Margielyn Didal, taekwondo jin Kurt Barbosa, rower Cris Nievarez, and weightlifters Hidilyn Diaz and Elreen Ando.
