De La Salle University-Dasmariñas (DLSU-D) in Cavite has been named a finalist in the International Green Gown Awards given by the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC) in the United Kingdom.
The Lasallian educational institution in the Philippines was announced as one of the 51 finalists from 23 countries in the 2021 edition of the awards given to exceptional sustainability initiatives being undertaken by universities and colleges around the world.
DLSU-D is vying for the Sustainability Institution of the Year Award, competing against Dumfries and Galloway College (UK), Higher Colleges of Technology (United Arab Emirates), Keele University (UK), King Faisal University (Saudi Arabia), Polytech Montpellier (France), Unicaf University (Cyprus, Malawi, Zambia, and Uganda), and Universidad Tecmilenio (Mexico).
De La Salle University-Dasmariñas is cited for its program “Sustainable DLSU-D: Making Green ‘Greener’ – Delivering quality education, nurturing sustainable mindsets”.
The educational institution has been adopting best practices geared towards environmental protection for 20 years. It has institutionalized its commitment to sustainability through the creation of comprehensive programs aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. “Sustainable DLSU-D: Making Green Greener!” was inspired by the school color (green) and the sustainable mindset the University seeks to inculcate among Lasallians.
The DLSU-D sustainability program includes the following initiatives:
- comprehensive income-generating Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) and effective segregation program
- curriculum integration
- the award-winning Project Carbon Neutral campaign
- tree planting initiatives through One Million Trees and Beyond
- sustainability-focused researches
- technology, internal and external partnerships
- effective use of green spaces
- biodiversity conservation
- the signing of the UN SDG Accord
DLSU-D President Br. Gus Boquer, FSC, signed the United Nations SDG Accord in 2020, joining the global movement to advance the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN.
DLSU-D had also recently committed to going net zero-carbon by the year 2050 during the Climate Expo Conference in May.
“DLSU-D is the 1st Philippine University among the first 600 universities around the world to commit to net zero carbon emissions by 2050. For the 8th consecutive year, DLSU-D is also the greenest university in the Philippines based on Greenmetric World Ranking of Universities,” shared Dr. Marlon Pareja after representing the DLSU-D President at the conference.
The International Green Gown Awards are endorsed by United Nations Environment and are supported by The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), L’Agence universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF) and International Association of Universities (IAU).
The International Green Gown Awards will be given out in a virtual ceremony on July 7 as part of the United Nations High-Level Political Forum.
