Quezon City resident Ana Patricia Non has set up a free food pantry in her local community to feed hungry passers-by during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The small business owner’s initiative called the “Maginhawa Community Pantry” offers anyone passing by her spot to take any of the food donations stocked in a bamboo cart along Maginhawa Street in Diliman.
“MAGINHAWA COMMUNITY PANTRY. Magbigay ayon sa kakayahan, Kumuha batay sa pangangailangan,” Ana Patricia Non shared in a Facebook post on April 14, 2021.
Non said anyone near the area can take what they need from the community pantry which is filled with food items such as vegetables, rice, vitamins, coffee, and canned goods, among others, depending on the day’s stocks. Needy residents can also get other items like hygiene products and face masks for free.
“Di nito masasagot ang root cause ng kagutuman pero okay na din na pantawid gutom sa mga nangangailangan. Mahirap magtrabaho, mag-aral at lumaban habang kumakalam ang tyan,” Non, identified as a University of the Philippines alumna and a member of the UP Artists Circle, adds.
People in the community who would like to support the initiative may leave food donations and essential groceries at the pantry, Non explains.
She also encouraged individuals from other areas to start their own community food pantries to help those in need.
The “Maginhawa Community Pantry” currently operates from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is set up near 96 Maginhawa Street in Diliman, Quezon City.

A charitable store in Las Piñas City in Metro Manila went viral on social media after giving away free essential groceries to needy Filipinos while the community-run kitchens of the “Kusinang Bayan” program fed the residents of Sitio San Roque in Quezon City during the reimposition of the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ).
Filipino karinderya food stalls are also being revived while helping feed poor families during the coronavirus pandemic.
