DLSU honors outstanding youth and education stories amid pandemic

De La Salle University (DLSU) today honored outstanding youth and education stories released on Philippine media amid the coronavorus pandemic.

The 16th Lasallian Scholarum Awards (LSA) held on March 26, 2021, via live streaming awarded the journalists behind five stories released on professional and youth media that highlighted the resilience of the country’s youth and education sectors in the face of the unprecedented challenges brought about by COVID-19 that closed down schools and moved learning sessions to various media.

The winning stories tackled the experiences of both teachers and students in using the new modes of learning.

Following are this year’s winners of the annual LSA:

  • Batch 2020” by GMA Network’s The Atom Araullo Specials for Outstanding Video Feature Story on Youth and Education
  • Private school teachers share their experiences in blended learning” by Noel Pabalate of Manila Bulletin for Outstanding Published Feature Story on Youth and Education in a Nationally Circulated Publication
  • No student left behind? During pandemic, education ‘only for those who can afford’” by Rappler’s Bonz Magsambol for Outstanding Online Feature Story on Youth and Education
  • Spectrum of experiences: Children with special needs face up to distance learning demands” by Kay Estepa, Glenielle Geraldo Nanglihan, and Criscela Ysabelle Racelis of DLSU’s The LaSallian for Outstanding Published Feature Story on Youth and Education in a School Organ
  • DLSU engineers just presented possible approach in distributing COVID antiviral drugs” by Rhia Grana of ABS-CBN for Outstanding Feature Story on De La Salle University

This year’s board of judges included former Senator Bam Aquino, Universal Robina Co-managing Director Marcia Gokongwei, Asia Foundation Chief of Party, Youth Leadership for Development Nathalie Christine Jorge, iVolunteer Philippines and The Good Store co-founder JB Tan, and DLSU University Fellow Dr. Clodualdo del Mundo, Jr.

Winners in the professional categories each received a sculpture especially designed and crafted by renowned sculptor Toym De Leon Imao.

Organized by DLSU’s Office for Strategic Communications, the Lasallian Scholarum Awards contracted an independent media-monitoring agency for the screening of youth and education news and feature stories.

DLSU scientists’ inspiring stories during the pandemic were featured in DOST webisodes.

Meanwhile, a Covid vaccine queue calculator was recently developed by a DLSU- UPLB team.
