Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio “Chito” Tagle has been appointed by Pope Francis to a new post as a member of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See (APSA) which operates like the Vatican’s central bank.

The former Archbishop of Manila’s new appointment to the APSA was announced by the Vatican on February 22, 2021.

APSA acts as the equivalent of a treasury and oversees real estate holdings and other sovereign assets. The office is headed by Italian Bishop Nunzio Galantino and also administers payroll and operating expenses for Vatican City.

Cardinal Tagle was earlier appointed as the Prefect of the Vatican Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, the department in charge of the Catholic Church’s missionary activities worldwide.

Pope Francis also promoted Cardinal Tagle to the order of “cardinal bishops”, the highest rank within the College of Cardinals, from where the Dean of College of Cardinals is elected. The dean presides at the conclave in the case of “sede vacante”, a period when there is no pope.

Tagle was also named a member of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue.

Cardinal Chito Tagle became cardinal in 2012. He started serving in 2015 as president of Caritas Internationalis, a confederation of Catholic charities around the world, a post that made the Filipino church leader the first Asian president of the umbrella organization of Catholic charities.

Prior to his post as Archbishop of Manila, Cardinal Tagle was the Bishop of the Diocese of Imus in Cavite, his home province.
