The story behind Filipino band Sponge Cola’s new song release, “Siguro Nga”, perfectly captures how Pinoys’ ended up embracing and loving the Korean drama, Start-up.
The single officially released on December 30, 2020, was actually first heard on December 2 tentatively titled, “Team Good Boy” when the popular pop-rock group went live on Facebook with band leader Yael Yuzon sharing how the song was written after he gained inspiration from Episode 9 of the Netflix K-Drama series, Start-up. The episode was when the good boy’s secret was revealed.
Yuzon shared how seeing the story of impending heartbreak experienced by Han Ji-pyeong, the breakout role of the “Good Boy” played by Kim Seon-ho, had him picking up the guitar and immediately writing the song, recording it, and releasing it in record time because “Intense Kasi Ng episode 9!”
To complete the song, Sponge Cola’s vocalist said he went through the crucial scenes of Ji-pyeong in the series that found their way into the song lyrics – of the one who got away, of missed chances, of one-sided loves, of keeping a secret to protect a loved one.
The very scenes that kept K-drama fans from the Philippines and around the world glued to the show and rooting for the second male lead, hoping against hope (and K-drama logic) that he would have a happy ending – Yuzon saw the same and crafted his song of heartbreak.
“Immediately after the shock of episode 9, I literally picked up a guitar and began writing the song… I didn’t know how the story was going to unfold, but at that point, I felt like it wasn’t going to work out for Han Ji-pyeong’s character. And while heartbreak wouldn’t ravage him, it leaves him with an undulating kind of pain,” Yuzon told Rappler.
The character development of Han Ji-pyeong had all the marks of a tragic character who deserves sympathy – an orphan boy who was regarded as a good boy by a doting stranger, a self-made rich boy without a family, a keeper of a secret to pay back a debt of gratitude, a man who realizes his feelings too late.
The love narrative of Han Ji-pyeong and first leads Nam Do-san (Nam Joo-hyuk), and Dal Mi (Bae Suzy) set against the world of start-up businesses gave viewers a peek into the technology industry and what it takes to be successful.
Sponge Cola is composed of Yael Yuzon on vocals and guitars, Gosh Dilay on bass, Armo Armovit on guitars, and drummer Tedmark Cruz.

Siguro Nga
Sa tuwing akoy dumarating, ika’y palaging paalis
Daan may laging salubong, titig di dumaraplis
Hanggang kailan magtitiis na walang sinasabi
Kung ano man tayo noon, anong luwang anong higpit
Siguro nga ikaw ang habang buhay kong nakawala
Ang tadhana ay mapagsamantala
Sa isang saglit wala ka na
Siguro nga ikaw ang habang buhay kong nakawala
Ang tadhana ay mapagsamantala
Sa isang saglit wala ka na
Nalingat saglit wala ka na
Nalingat saglit wala ka na
Nalingat saglit wala ka na
Nalingat saglit wala ka na
Nalingat saglit wala ka na
Nalingat saglit wala ka na
Kaya hanggang ngayon
Kahit lumipas na ang pagkakataon
Pag naririnig ko ang pangalan mo
Ako’y ngumingiti’t pumipikit
