Muntinlupa City has launched the first innovative ‘learning bus’ of its kind in Metro Manila that teaches residents about disaster resilience and risk reduction while raising awareness about climate change adaptation.

The learning bus comes with state-of-the-art facilities including a Virtual Reality (VR) simulation of “close-to-actual” scenarios of natural disasters involving earthquakes, flooding, storm surge, volcanic eruption, tsunami, and landslide, among others.

The VR area aims to provide an immersive, visual, and sound-based experience so people are more prepared for real calamities in the future.

DDRM’s Mobile Learning Hub is also equipped with an interactive Lecture Area to educate residents about disaster response and mitigation, COVID-19 protective measures, as well as first aid training, and basic life support.

The Mobile Learning Hub of the city’s Department of Disaster Resilience and Management (DDRM) was inaugurated by City Mayor Jaime Fresnedi and other local officials on January 4, 2021.

City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office head Erwin Alfonso says that the learning resource hub will soon visit several communities while following strict Covid-19 health and safety protocols.

Other disaster management initiatives in the Philippines include the mobile apps of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) that help Filipinos know if their location is at risk for natural calamities, Mapua University’s new disaster warning tool called eSalba, and the University of the Philippines Simulation-Based Learning Laboratory to advance disaster response among health care professionals and first responders.

Here are Safety Guides on when strong earthquakes strike and when typhoons strike during the Covid 19 Pandemic.
