Filipino junior tennis champion Michael Francis “Miko” Eala is playing for Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) when the United States National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) resumes its season.
The 18-year-old Miko Eala signed up for Penn State Athletics after graduating from high school in 2020 at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Manacor, Spain, where he trained for a professional career.
The Penn State Athletics site introduced its freshman student as a successful Filipino player.
Among Eala’s credentials cited were the following:
- captured the singles title in the 2019 Hellenic Bank Masters Tennis Academy tournament held in Cyprus
- won the boys’ singles title at the CPSP-Philta International Junior Tennis Championship in 2018
- achieved a No. 98 ITF junior world ranking
Penn State also notes how Miko Eala began to play tennis competitively at 6 years old. The Filipino tennis champion comes from a family of athletes with younger sister Alex, the 2020 Australian Open Doubles Champion, and his mother, Rizza Maniego-Eala, a 100m backstroke bronze medalist in the 1985 Southeast Asian Games.
In 2020, Miko Eala won the Doubles title at the Lousada Portugal tourney.
