Filipino priest Angelito Cortez named Vice-Director of Franciscans Office in Rome

Filipino priest Angelito Cortez has been named the new Vice-Director of the Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) Office in Rome of the Order of the Friars Minor (OFM), more popularly known as the Franciscans.

Father Cortez has been involved in various JPIC ministries including many international as well as regional campaigns.

“I am humbled with this assignment but I will try my best to be the best that I can be for the church and for my congregation,” Father Angelito Cortez told Veritas 846 in an interview.

“Nakakintal dito sa puso ko ang lahat ng makulay na karanasan kasama ng lahat ng mga kapanalig na nagpapaalala na totoong buhay ang Diyos at hindi nya tayo pinababayaan,” Fr. Cortez adds.

In the interview with the church-run Veritas 846, Cortez said he will remain in the Philippines as the current Co-Executive Secretary of the AMRSP and will fulfill his new duties in Rome through a temporary “work from the country” set-up due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Father Angelito Andig Cortez is currently a member of the JPIC Animation Committee of the order. He is also the chairperson of the Franciscan Solidarity Movement for Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation.

The Filipino Franciscan leads many advocacies in the country and is the national coordinator for the Ecological Justice Interfaith Movement, Global Catholic Climate Movement Philippines, and Franciscans for the Care of Creation Association, among other organizations.

Fr. Cortez also works closely with the Franciscan International in Geneva collaborating for Human Rights lobby work regarding the human rights situation in the Philippines.

Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle was appointed to the post of Prefect for Evangelization in the Vatican and elected as a new member of the Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue.
