Filipinos rank 3rd for favoring wearing of face masks amid pandemic

Face shields, surgical masks, cloth masks, and medical-grade masks are types of face protection adopted by Filipinos.

Filipinos are ranked 3rd in the world for favoring the wearing of face masks amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The citizens of the Philippines ranked high on the face mask adoption survey conducted by research and financial comparison website Finder.com.

The Southeast Asian nation was third with 87% among the 2,009 Filipino adults polled revealing they own a specified face mask.

The Finder research on 15 countries is topped by the United Kingdom (97%) followed by South Africa (90%).

The type of face mask favored by Filipinos are as follows:

1. Face shields – 43%
2. Blue surgical masks – 35%)
3. Cloth masks – 31%
4. Medical grade masks 20%

The Finder report sent to Good News Pilipinas also indicates the Philippines has the highest ownership rate of face shields of all countries included in the study, with the UK coming in second with just 13% of the population owning a face shield – a full 30 percentage points lower than the Philippines.

The report also reveals that in the Philippines those aged 45-54 years old are leading the pack for face mask adoption (92%), followed by those aged 65+ (80%). Meanwhile the youngest adult group – those aged 18-24 – are least likely to own a mask (76%).

The Philippines adopted the mandatory requirement for face masks and face shields to protect its citizens from being infected by the virus droplets and placed the country under various levels of community quarantine to curb the spread of the coronavirus disease.

Various initiatives to fabricate and design face shields and cloth face masks for public use have come out to allow the use of scarce medical-grade face protection to be reserved for medical and other frontline workers in the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Department of Science and Technology and universities such as the University of the Philippines have fabricated face shields and designed cloth face masks for public use.

Philippine heritage masks have also been created by local designers to champion the use of indigenous material for the personal protective equipment.
