The first-ever Filipino anime series ‘Barangay 143’ will start streaming on Netflix this October.
The proudly Pinoy-made animation first went on air over GMA Network from October 2018 to June 2019.
The anime series follows the story of Bren Park, a South Korean basketball superstar who migrates to the Philippines in search of his biological father in Manila. Park finds an unlikely family in a ‘gang of misfits’ from Barangay 143 who are trying their best to bring glory to their hometown.
The Pinoy basketball series drew inspiration from the highly popular Japanese manga series ‘Slamdunk.’
Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) greats Benjie Paras and Doug Kramer lent their voices for the local show’s characters.
Barangay 143 also features an all-star main cast: Migo Adecer (Bren Park), Julie Anne San Jose (Vicky), Ruru Madrid (Wax), and Kelley Day (Jinri). Veteran actors including John Arcilla, Edu Manzano, and Cherie Gil were also voice talents for the show.
The series was produced by Philippine-based Synergy88 Entertainment Media Inc. and ASI Animation Studio in collaboration with Singapore’s August Media Holdings, and TV Asahi (Japan).
This year, the Pinoy animated basketball series captured the Asian Television Award for Best 2D Animated Programme.
Barangay 143 also snagged the Best Animated Program or Series at the 2019 Asian Academy Creative Awards.
