The Philippines’ Tokyo Olympian in pole vault, Ernest John “EJ” Obiena, earned the silver medal at the 13th Triveneto International Meeting held in Italy.

Obiena, the country’s first qualifier to the Tokyo Olympics, earned his new medal as he returned to competition on August 1, 2020, at the Stadio Giuseppe Grezar in Trieste, Italy.

The Filipino champion, currently ranked 16th in the world and Asia’s top pole vault athlete, cleared 5.45 meters behind Olympic gold medallist Thiago Braz da Silva of Brazil.

The 24-year-old Obiena ranked 2nd among 9 competitors of mostly Italians in his first outdoor competition after the COVID-19 lockdown that halted sports events around the world in March.

Obiena, who is currently based in Italy for his Olympics training, is eyeing to compete in the Diamond League on August 14.

EJ Obiena is also scheduled to compete at a virtual 3-way battle against fellow Tokyo Olympians on August 17.
