As the Technological Institute of the Philippines (T.I.P.) shifts to online and flexible learning for the School Year 2020-2021, it also converted some of its student programs and services to be accessible online such as the Study Group Tutorial (SGT).

The SGT program began 3 years ago as an on-campus study group activity headed by peer student tutors. The pre-selected group of students tutored and assisted fellow students and peers in particular courses or lessons where they needed help. The face-to-face tutorials were being conducted at the T.I.P. grounds and were offered for free to students.

T.I.P. saw the significance of the service to students and thus included the SGT among the programs and services it offers online, changing its name to Online Study Group Tutorial (OSGT) and making it a permanent feature of the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), the official online learning platform of T.I.P. where students can access the program.

The OSGT remains free as T.I.P.’s way to welcome incoming college freshmen and transferees.

Incoming college freshmen and transferees can register for free to OSGT soon after they enroll in T.I.P. which tentatively starts on Wednesday, July 1, 2020.

They have the option to choose topics in Mathematics and English under the guidance of the Math and Physics Department and English Language Proficiency Training Managers. The online version of the program is being facilitated by faculty members and peer tutors as teaching assistants.

Early access to OSGT is beneficial for college freshmen and transferees because it is a good starting point for them to experience what it is like to learn online. It also gives them time to adjust to using Canvas LMS before online and flexible learning classes start on Monday, August 24, 2020.

As additional good news, T.I.P. shall extend the OSGT to its alumni. Aside from Mathematics and English, Advanced Coursework shall also be offered to them for free to help them prepare for their board examinations and work. This is their opportunity to have a refresher course at no cost.

Enrolling in the program shall be like acquiring a private tutor at home that allows them to access their educational materials anytime at their own pace, helping increase their ability to do asynchronous learning. This is a whole new learning experience for the students that is in line with T.I.P.’s new thrust to lead in the online and flexible learning in the new normal.

The USAID recognized the Technological Institute of the Philippines as a Model Career Center that champions student success.

T.I.P.’s professor Jopeth Ramis was a Newton Prize Chair’s Award finalist for 2020.
