SM Foundation continues to significantly impact disaster relief and community development in the Philippines. In 2024 alone, the corporate social responsibility (CSR) arm of SM Group distributed over 108,000 Kalinga Packs through 41 Operation Tulong Express (OPTE) missions, providing swift aid to communities affected by natural disasters.
Since its inception, the SM Foundation has conducted 783 relief missions and distributed 982,415 Kalinga Packs, reinforcing its role as a reliable partner in disaster response and recovery. OPTE, a key disaster relief initiative, ensures the delivery of essential supplies, including medicines, mineral water, rice, ready-to-eat meals, and instant noodles, to underserved areas.
SM Markets leads the pack distribution, while logistics partners Airspeed and 2GO provide swift transportation of supplies. SM Malls, through SM Cares, also assist by offering temporary shelter, charging stations, and additional relief support.
“The SM Group, through SM Foundation, has been working directly with communities to give them the assistance they require, especially in times of calamities and natural disasters, by leveraging our corporate assets to secure resources. We are committed to being a responsible neighbor in the communities where we operate,” said Debbie Sy, SM Foundation Executive Director.
Beyond disaster relief, the SM Foundation remains dedicated to improving education. Honoring SM founder Henry Sy, Sr.’s belief that education is key to breaking the cycle of poverty, the Foundation inaugurated a new school building at San Fernando South Central Integrated School in La Union in 2024. To date, SM Foundation has constructed 110 school buildings and over 370 classrooms nationwide, ensuring Filipino students have access to safe learning environments.
SM Foundation’s education initiatives began after Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in 2013, which prompted the Foundation to expand its support beyond immediate relief. This includes rebuilding schools, offering scholarships, conducting medical missions, and launching housing and livelihood programs.
“We actively engage with affected communities through dialogues, ensuring that our efforts are aligned with their needs on the ground. This collaborative approach helps us strengthen the impact of our initiatives, and we follow up with an impact assessment to continuously improve our programs,” Sy added.
With a focus on healthcare, education, livelihood, and disaster response, SM Foundation continues to be a dependable partner for Filipino communities, embodying the spirit of a good neighbor in both good and challenging times.
