Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao Makes History at World Architecture Festival

Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao (Mapúa MCM) has made history as the first institution from Mindanao to secure two finalist entries in the World Architecture Festival (WAF), set to take place this year from November 6-8, 2024, at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore.

The shortlisted entries were led by fifth-year B.S. Architecture students Jasper Marie Arnilla and Arnel Rasheed Defensor, who each headed six-member teams. Defensor’s Team A submitted RANINA, a proposed Hawker Center and Transient Evacuation Center in Bislig City. Arnilla’s Team B entry is REVIVE, a proposed Solid Waste Management Complex and Ecological Park Rehabilitating Davao Sanitary Landfill.

Mapúa MCM’s participation is in the Student Charrette, a featured event at WAF that allows student teams from around the world to showcase their creative design concepts to attendees and a panel of expert judges.

The two Mapúa MCM groups are competing against 6 other teams in the finals in line with the WAF conference theme of “Tomorrow” which explores innovative design interventions aimed at enhancing the quality and potential of buildings, neighborhoods, and landscapes.

  • University of the West of England, United Kingdom
  • Queen’s University Belfast, Ireland

Before clinching their finalist berths, the teams attended a webinar with previous WAF Student Charrette winners, gaining valuable insights to refine their presentations ahead of the competition.
