The University of the Philippines Resilience Institute’s Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards (UP NOAH) introduces a step-by-step guide on using the NOAH Studio feature to help individuals avoid environmental hazards.

Using Talisay, Batangas as an example—one of many areas hit by heavy rain as Typhoon Kristine swept through the Philippines last week—this guide helps users interpret weather data effectively to stay safe during extreme weather events.

Step 1: Monitor Rainfall Forecasts
Stay updated on rainfall forecasts from @Weather_Manila or @dost_pagasa. In Talisay, Batangas, rainfall reached 437 millimeters within just 24 hours—an alarming amount that could trigger natural hazards.

Step 2: Check for Landslide Risks on the Hazard Map
Using the NOAH website, locate areas marked in green to identify landslide-prone zones. If the forecast shows continuous heavy rain, it is advisable to evacuate early to nearby areas that appear white on the hazard map, which indicates safer ground.

Step 3: Identify Flood-Prone Areas
Look for areas highlighted in blue on the map to determine flood risks. If heavy rains are expected, head to safer zones marked in white before the peak of the rainfall.

Here’s a video guide posted by UPRI NOAH chief Mahar Lagmay:

Share the video to help others stay informed on how to avoid hazards.

Note that users can customize the colors on the NOAH hazard maps according to their preference, making it easier to understand and apply the information to their surroundings.

Project NOAH’s practical guide underscores the importance of timely weather data interpretation to prevent calamity-related risks. Make sure to explore the NOAH website and familiarize yourself with its features to safeguard your family and community.
