Pisay-Led Team Philippines Earns Double Medals, Honors at 56th International Chemistry Olympiad

Team Philippines, composed of Philippine Science High School (PSHS/Pisay) students, extended the country’s 8-year medal-winning streak at the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO). The prestigious annual competition brings together the world’s most talented secondary school chemistry students.

The Filipino team secured two bronze medals and two honorable mentions after a rigorous five-hour laboratory practical exam and a five-hour theoretical examination at the 56th IChO held from July 21-30, 2024, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

ICYMI Philippine Science High School Students Secure Awards at International Chemistry Olympiad

Following are the team’s achievements at the 2024 IChO:

  • Bronze medalist Rex Alphonse Reventar of PSHS-Main Campus led the Filipino awardees, ranking 109th out of 232 award recipients from 67 countries.
  • Gelraycs Jules D. Fornan of PSHS-SOCCSKSARGEN Region Campus took home his second consecutive Bronze medal, finishing in 173rd rank.
  • Jacob Emmanuel P. Sadorra of PSHS-Central Luzon Campus was awarded an Honorable mention and secured 214th place.
  • Michael B. Javier Ogden of PSHS-Main Campus received an Honorable mention at the 216th spot.

The PSHS System shared the achievements of the team in a Facebook post.

This achievement by Pisay students reinforces the Department of Science and Technology-PSHS system’s commitment to delivering world-class science education. Dr. Raymond S. Malabed of De La Salle University and Dr. Ian Ken D. Dimzon of Ateneo de Manila University mentored the team.

The Philippines has not yet won an IChO gold medal, awarded to the top 12% of students. From 2017 to 2024, Filipino students have won 4 Silver medals (next 22%), 16 Bronze medals (next 32%), and 6 Honorable mentions (top 10% of non-medalists).
