Five Philippine universities are again on the list of top global schools in the 2025 Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings (QS WUR), globally recognized as a premier resource for comparative data on university performance.

The University of the Philippines (UP), Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), and De La Salle University (DLSU) improved their QS WUR rank. Meanwhile, the University of Santo Tomas (UST) and the University of San Carlos (USC) moved down the list.

The QS WUR 2025 results released on June 4, 2024, indicate that UP continues its leadership in the Philippines’ ranking for the 12th straight year since local universities first made the list in 2012.

ADMU is second and DLSU is in the third spot. UST and USC saw declines in their rankings compared to last year’s QS WUR.

The rankings were evaluated based on nine metrics: Academic Reputation, Citations per Faculty, Employment Outcomes, Employer Reputation, Faculty Student Ratio, International Faculty Ratio, International Research Network, International Students Ratio, and Sustainability.

UP’s Best QS WUR

The University of the Philippines tops the Philippine Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the QS World and QS Asia rankings.

The lone state university among the five improved its position to 336th, achieving an overall score of 33.3. This marks a significant ascent of 68 places from its previous ranking of 404th, where it held a score of 26.7. This year’s ranking stands as UP’s peak position attained since 2012.

UP’s strengths, according to the QS’s evaluation result, are sustainability, employment outcomes, employer reputation, and international research network with a score of 67.7, 65.6, 65.3, and 60.9, respectively.

Ateneo Keeps 2nd Spot

The Ateneo de Manila University continues as the second highest-ranked institution of higher learning and the top private university in the Philippines on the QS WUR.

ADMU moved up the list to 516th place with an overall score of 23.6, surpassing its ranking last year at 563rd with a score of 20.9.

Employment outcomes and employer reputation are the most established strengths of Ateneo with scores of 70.6 and 64.5 out of 100, respectively.

DLSU Climbs 3 Brackets

De La Salle University saw an improvement in its ranking while retaining its position behind ADMU in the HEI and private institution QS rankings.

DLSU climbed from the 681-690 bracket to the 641-650 range this year.

The Catholic co-educational institution’s best scores are in employer reputation with a score of 52.4, and employment outcomes with a score of 47.4.

UST, Oldest Asian Uni

The University of Santo Tomas, however, has continuously dropped in rank since its 601+ place in the 2012 edition. UST’s rank landed on the 851-900th bracket this year although still maintaining its position as 4th best university in the country.

QS recognized the oldest existing university in Asia’s employer reputation as its best strength this year with a score of 39.9 out of 100, followed by the international faculty ratio with a score of 34.9 out of 100.

USC, Cebu’s Best

Meanwhile, the University of San Carlos in Cebu marks its second time as a top global university on the QS WUR. However, its ranking fell from its debut bracket at 1201-1400 to rank 1401+.

The sole Visayan institution among the top universities in the country has obtained the highest score in employment outcomes, with a rating of 9.6 out of 100, closely followed by employer reputation, scoring 9.4 out of 100.

This year’s QS WUR is the largest to date with 1,503 universities from 104 higher education systems included in the list topped by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
