GoodNewsPilipinas witnessed the flag-raising ceremony and rites at the historic Emilio Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite, as the Philippines celebrates its 126th Independence Day (Araw ng Kalayaan) on June 12 2024. Here are the highlights of the day.
A socio-civic parade of 5,000 members of the local government unit (LGU), along with community organizations and matching bands, preceded the national program of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP).
The national program, hosted by GoodNewsPilipinas Managing Editor Angie Quadra-Balibay, began with a wreath-laying ceremony at the grave of the first president of the Philippine Republic, General Emilio Aguinaldo, led by the Guest of Honor, Phillipine Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla, Jr., and witnessed by Kawit and Cavite local government officials, the NHCP, and the Philippine Navy marines.

The national program continued at the balcony of the Emilio Aguinaldo shrine coinciding with the simultaneous nationwide flag raising at 8 AM.
The flag-raising and pledge to the flag was followed by a reading of an excerpt from the 1898 Proclamation of Philippine Independence by 1st District Congressman Ramon “Jolo” Revilla III.

In his speech as Guest of Honor, Senator Bong Revilla, Jr. highlighted the importance of nationalism and called for the protection of the country’s sovereignty.
Following the national program, the NHCP Museo ni Emilio Aguinaldo and the Municipality of Kawit opened the exhibit, “Mga Sáyang Pumilayláy: The Lilith Reyes-Perez Collection” at the grounds floor of Aguinaldo Shrine.
Activities continued with the town celebration at the Freedom Park fronting the shrine with the Kalayaan Trade Fair and the Kalayaan Musical Festival headlined by Filipino artists Flow G, Skusta Clee, Moonstar88, Imago, and 6Cyclemind.
Called the House of History, Emilio Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite is the place where the historic declaration of Philippine independence was publicly read by its author Ambrosio Bautista at the front window of the grand hall on June 12, 1898.
