Intramuros has embraced eco-friendly transportation options, transforming sustainability into a seamless and enriching visitor experience in Manila’s historic Walled City. Enhanced bike lanes and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure ensure seamless exploration, blending convenience with environmental consciousness for locals and tourists alike. These improvements and the fully pedestrianized General Luna Street aim to provide safer movement and better access to the city’s iconic historical landmarks.
The projects to enhance mobility while preserving cultural heritage in the popular travel destination were introduced during the inauguration of new active and public transportation infrastructure in Intramuros on June 21, 2024.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) introduced the expanded bike lanes covering 9.35 kilometers, four new public transport stops, upgraded pedestrian walkways, and the installation of accessibility ramps for persons with disabilities (PWDs).
DOTr Assistant Secretary Jose Lim IV highlighted the projects’ impact on the environment, stating, “We are replicating this initiative in the countryside to help protect the environment from rising CO2 emissions of fossil-fueled vehicles.”
The initiative is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of this year with an investment of PHP64.16 million. DOTr said it aims to transform key streets such as General Luna, Sto. Tomas, Postigo, and parts of Sta. Clara into safer spaces for cyclists and pedestrians alike.
Intramuros Administrator Atty. Joan Padilla emphasized the cultural significance of the project, noting, “It is an initiative that marks a significant advancement in our commitment to preserving the past while embracing the future.”
Mobility advocates also supported the project. Robert Siy Jr. from the Move as One Coalition stated that pedestrianized streets like General Luna should remind people of the need to create this same environment in every community.
The infrastructure is expected to accommodate 1.9 million visitors annually and promote eco-friendly modes of transportation within the historic walled city once completed.
The project aligns with broader national efforts as the DOTr aims to establish 2,400 kilometers of bike lanes nationwide by 2028.
“We hope citizens will continue to support the project until completion so we can witness the transformation of Intramuros,” Assistant Secretary Lim added.
The inauguration event, attended by officials from the DOTr, Intramuros Administration, and tourism bodies, marks a milestone in Intramuros’ journey towards sustainable tourism and enhanced urban mobility.
