The Philippines’ Department of Science and Technology – Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) is now on TikTok with the new campaign for dietary, nutritional, and health instruction, “BakEAT Hindi?”

For several years, the research institute produced information packages such as booklets, flyers, nutritional videos, and other Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials to promote healthy foods and proper nutrition in the country.

As traditional media became less appealing to the public who turned to more modern platforms for news and information, DOST-FNRI decided to explore other mediums of communication that could better engage more Filipinos, particularly children and teenagers, on food and nutrition topics.

The result: DOST-FNRI’s Food and Nutrition Marketing Unit launched a short-form video campaign called “BakEAT Hindi?” on the DOST-FNRI TikTok account.

The videos feature DOST-FNRI officials, several interventions, and campaigns of the government agency broadcast in a fun and engaging way.

The first “BakEAT Hindi?” episode in February 2024 introduced complementary feeding as an intervention for nutrient deficiency and poor feeding practices among Filipino infants. This TikTok video urges Filipino parents to complement their infant’s nutritional needs with food technologies developed by DOST-FNRI.

During the dry season in May, a video showed how Filipinos could stay hydrated, highlighting the benefits of a sufficient daily water intake.

Using digital platforms like TikTok with millions of users worldwide, DOST-FNRI is finding a way to spotlight food, nutrition, and health-related information across social media platforms.

Along with other promotional materials relating to the institute’s current events and programs, the initiative of DOST-FNRI to create social media content can be a gateway for a healthy and well-informed nation of Filipinos.
