Good News Pilipinas Editor Advocates Positive Reporting at UP-CMC Lecture

Speaking before journalism students at the University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication (UP-CMC), Good News Pilipinas managing editor Angie Quadra-Balibay advocated the concept of good news as legitimate journalism.

“Good news doesn’t mean ignoring critical issues,” she asserted. “It means presenting a holistic view of our society—one that includes stories of hope, progress, and positive change,” Quadra-Balibay, who is an alumna of UP-CMC, noted.

In her March 14, 2024, lecture, Quadra-Balibay emphasized the importance of legitimate journalism in an era dominated by sensationalism and clickbait. She challenged the aspiring journalists in the audience to seek out stories that often go unnoticed—the unsung heroes, the community initiatives, and the small victories. “Legitimate journalism,” she explained, “is about truth, accuracy, and fairness. It’s also about amplifying voices that inspire and uplift.”

She added that there was more to journalism than just reporting problems. The website, she said, celebrated Filipino triumphs, resilience, and the kindness that exists in our society.

She noted that it was often a misconception that good news is public relations. “Yes, we want to write good news stories about the Philippines and Filipinos, but we are very selective about it,” she said, adding that her news website avoids writing flattering stories about politicians, celebrities, products, and services.

Many of these heartwarming narratives align with rigorous journalism standards, she said even as she explained that stories on the Good News Pilipinas site also undergo the same vetting process as in any newsroom. “We check our facts, we make sure that the stories are true,” she said.

The lecture, which lasted for more than an hour, provided students with the insight that it is possible to uphold journalistic integrity while spreading hope and optimism.
