Filipino broadcast journalist Rico Hizon of CNN Philippines is setting his sights on further accolades at the 28th Asian Television Awards (ATA), slated for January 2024 in Vietnam. Hizon, a familiar face on the global news stage, has garnered nominations for Best News Presenter or Anchor and Best News Programme with his nightly newscast, The Final Word.
This marks Hizon’s third consecutive year of double nominations at the ATA, a testament to his distinguished career spanning over 25 years at international networks like BBC World News and CNBC Asia. His return to the Philippines has been nothing short of triumphant, with The Final Word clinching the Best News Programme award in 2022 and Hizon achieving the unprecedented feat of double victories in a single year at the 2021 ATA. Hizon also became the first Filipino anchor of a worldwide news program to win the ATA, a feat he achieved when he was with BBC World News.
The Final Word faces stiff competition in the Best News Programme category, contending with both local and international newscasts, including PTV News Tonight and Eye of the Eagle Primetime from the Philippines, China’s Global Watch and Archaeological Record of Yangtze No. 2 Ancient, Formosa News and TITV Daily News from Taiwan, and Indonesia’s Liputan 6 Siang PT Surya Citra Televisi.
In his bid for Best News Presenter or Anchor, Hizon is up against a diverse group of seasoned journalists, including fellow Filipinos Joee Guilas and Charms Espina, India’s Shereen Bhan, Anand Narasimhan, and Kishore Ajwani, Ryan Wiedaryanto of Indonesia, and Taiwan’s Lee Chen-Chen.

The Philippines has made a significant mark at this year’s ATA, securing 28 nominations, including one for Pia Hontiveros of CNN Philippines, who was nominated for Best Current Affairs Presenter. The award ceremony promises to showcase Asia’s finest in broadcasting, with Hizon also set to represent the Philippines at the prestigious Asian Academy Creative Awards (AACA) this December, following his win as the country’s Best Factual Presenter for 2023.
