Pasig City empowers students with travel allowances, free school supplies, and food packs

Pasig City students can now receive transportation allowances, school supplies, and food packs as part of a groundbreaking program for their welfare and development.

This school year, students from K-12 schools under the jurisdiction of the Department of Education-Pasig are each entitled to a one-time fund of PHP 1500. In a Facebook post, Pasig Mayor Vico Sotto indicated that these funds will cover Pasig residents’ transportation fees to and from school. The distribution of the allowances will commence from September 6-15, 2023.

Many students have since received the allowance. “I’m very happy since it’s a big help especially in the purchase of school supplies and for transportation when it rains,” Santolan High School student Shane Nicole Prepotente shared in an interview with The Santolanian. Learners in the aforementioned public school began acquiring their allowances on September 7, 2023.

Along with this, the city will continue to provide school supplies for pupils. In previous years, the local government has delivered pencils, notepads, scissors, crayons, bags, and other learning materials. However, students may expect delays this year as Sotto indicated that there have been some issues with delivery and suppliers.

“Masyado kami naging optimistic sa timeline at nagkulang sa buffer para sa mga aberya; halimbawa, may na-disqualify na supplier dahil mali ang kalidad o materyales,” the city mayor said in the Facebook post. He said that the city will recalibrate the timeline in the following school year.

In the meantime, Pasigueño students are now availing of the food packs provided by the Malusog na Batang Pasigueño (MBP) program. Launched in 2021, MBP seeks to promote basic nutrition and physical health among the city’s learners. “The Local Government Unit of Pasig City has allotted PHP 500 per student from the Special Education Fund to provide food packs containing a bag of rice, canned goods, nutri-milk, iodized salt, monggo beans, plant-based noodles, and multi-vitamins with iron,” the Schools Division Office of the city stated in a press release.

The project first distributed the food packs to public school students including enrollees of special education programs, such as those aimed at disabled learners. The program has since set the initiative to eventually donate food packs to all students in the city.

In his September 1st Facebook post, the city mayor noted that the relaunch of MBP has begun, with the first tranche donating tuna, iodized salt, and vitamins to students. A second tranche, which will be giving milk goods, will push through this September. A third tranche containing rice products will also roll out this semester.

Pasig City has kickstarted many progressive initiatives for its constituency. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the local government announced its plans to distribute computer tablets to the city’s students. In 2020, the city also launched a social amelioration program for families not covered by national aid.
