The International Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad (IOAA) has seen a momentous achievement by the Philippines with Mohammad Nur Casib, a scholar from Philippine Science High School (PSHS) – Central Mindanao Campus, securing the country’s first-ever medal win at the event. This historic victory occurred at the 16th annual IOAA hosted at the Planetarium – Silesian Science Park in Chorzow, Poland.
Casib’s triumph marked the Philippines’ first podium finish at the IOAA in the 13 years since its debut in 2010. He was awarded a coveted Silver medal, one of 41 given at the event, and led the Philippine delegates as the first-place winner in the national qualifiers earlier this year.
Alongside Casib, PSHS-Main Campus student Yanna Lorraine Tenorio also made her mark, bringing home one of the 29 Honorable Mentions (HM) at the IOAA. It was the third HM for the Philippines in this prestigious competition.
The Filipino delegation, including PSHS-Main Campus students Patrick Abeleda, Sean Ken Galanza, and Caesar Lopez Jr., proudly represented their country at the IOAA held in Chorzow from August 10-20, 2023. Team Philippines, joining 250 students from 50 countries, engaged in rigorous three-stage competitions involving theory, observation, and analysis of astronomical data.
The triumphs of Team Philippines at the 2023 IOAA were duly recognized and celebrated by the Philippine Science High School through social media announcements.
Additional accolades were shared by PSHS – Central Mindanao Campus, highlighting that the IOAA medal won by Casib marked his third victory in as many Olympiads between July and August. These include a Bronze medal at the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) in Switzerland and another Bronze at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Japan.
This historic achievement underscores the immense talent and dedication of young Filipino scientists, marking a proud moment for the Philippines in the global arena of astronomy and astrophysics. The accolades reflect not only individual excellence but also the rising prominence of the Philippines in international scientific competitions.
SHARE THIS remarkable achievement with fellow Filipinos and celebrate the genius of our youth in science. Spread the good news, and inspire others with the story of Team Philippines at the IOAA!
