Celebrations are in order as all four representatives from the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) are returning from the 2023 International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) in Switzerland, clutching awards that gleam with hard-earned pride. This accomplishment continues the legacy of excellence of the PSHS system, administered by the Department of Science and Technology, in delivering world-class science education to Filipino students.

The team, consisting of all-Pisay students, Gelraycs Jules D. Fornan (PSHS SOCCSKSARGEN Campus), Mohammad Nur G. Casib (PSHS Central Mindanao Campus), Lemuel A. Acosta (PSHS Central Luzon Campus), and Kiersten Gene M. Calubaquib (PSHS Main Campus), showed stellar performance by winning three of the 170 bronze medals and one honorable mention from the 27 awarded at the 55th IChO.

Conquering the local competition first, these bright minds earned their spots on Team Philippines to compete among the world’s 348 finest science students from 86 different nations in the international rounds held from July 16-25 in Zurich.

Let’s take a closer look at how Team Philippines fared at the 2023 IChO:

  • Bronze medalist: Gelraycs Jules D. Fornan, the whiz from PSHS SOCCSKSARGEN Campus, came in at an impressive rank of #142.
  • Bronze medalist: Mohammad Nur G. Casib from PSHS Central Mindanao Campus displayed exceptional talent, securing rank #192.
  • Bronze medalist: Lemuel A. Acosta, representing PSHS Central Luzon Campus, clinched a commendable #204.
  • Honorable Mention: Kiersten Gene M. Calubaquib, the promising talent from PSHS Main Campus, held the rank of #229.

Notably, Acosta has proven his mettle before by receiving an honorable mention at the 54th International Chemistry Olympiad held remotely from China last year, while Casib won another bronze medal which helped Team Philippines deliver the country’s best-ever team score at the 64th International Mathematical Olympiad held in Japan in early July.

The International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) is an esteemed global platform recognizing the crème de la crème among young chemists worldwide through a grueling five-hour laboratory practical and an equally challenging five-hour written theoretical examination.

The PSHS, under the auspices of the Department of Science and Technology, remains the Philippines’ leading science high school, committed to nurturing the country’s future scientists.

The world will have its eyes set again on Filipino young science enthusiasts when the next International Chemistry Olympiad kicks off from July 21-31, 2024, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Here’s to the continuing success of our future chemistry maestros!
