In a show of exceptional scientific prowess, students from the Philippine Science High School – Central Visayas Campus (PSHS-CVisC) secured both first and third prizes in the prestigious 9th ASEAN Student Science Project Competition (ASPC 2023) held in Pathum Thani, Thailand.
The triumphant duo, Liah Mei I. Caduyac and Ethan Jeushrey R. Montuya, won the gold in the physical science category for their ingenious project “Design and Fabrication of an Inexpensive Curcumin-Based Paper Sensor for Sodium Hypochlorite Sensing”. In a competition that celebrated innovation and cost-effectiveness, their achievement highlights the Philippines’ leading role in nurturing future scientific leaders.
Not far behind, their schoolmates Marybel Zyres A. Montejo and Henry T. Yap III also climbed the podium, securing the third prize award in the applied science category. Their research on a “Low-Cost Colorimetric Device for Rapid Pre-Detection of Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)” is an emblem of practical science designed to contribute positively to global health.
The competition, which took place from July 1 to 4, 2023, at the National Science Museum Thailand, was co-organized by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation in collaboration with The Science Society of Thailand under the Patronage of His Majesty the King.
These young Filipino prodigies, guided by their coach Dr. Benito Baje, excelled in a pool of over 86 participants from grades 9 to 12. These students hailed from nine ASEAN countries, including Thailand, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Myanmar, and were joined by representatives from China.
ASPC 2023 was designed to foster friendly competition, enhance scientific process skills, and offer a platform for cultural exchange among ASEAN youths. By promoting the development of 21st-century skills and stimulating the exchange of experiences, the competition further bolsters ASEAN’s commitment to nurturing its scientific talents. With such remarkable feats as displayed by the PSHS-CVisC students, the future of science in the Philippines and the ASEAN region appears bright indeed.
