Six Filipino high school students have made history by achieving the Philippines’ best team score at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). The team’s stellar performance this year has catapulted the nation to the 26th rank among 112 countries, a significant leap from its 55th position last year.
The 2023 IMO Team Philippines, composed of six brilliant minds, brought home a total of three silver and three bronze medals from the competition held in Chiba, Japan. This achievement marks a new milestone in the country’s 35-year participation in the IMO.
Meet the Medalists
The silver medals were awarded to:
- Raphael Dylan Dalida from the Philippine Science High School – Main Campus
- Jerome Austin Te from the Jubilee Christian Academy
- Filbert Ephraim Wu from the Victory Christian International School
The bronze medals were bagged by:
- Mohammad Nur Casib from the Philippine Science High School – Central Mindanao Campus
- Alvann Walter Paredes Dy from the Saint Jude Catholic School
- Rickson Caleb Tan from the MGC New Life Christian Academy
This year’s team surpassed the Philippines’ 2022 performance of 119 points and 55th position among 104 participating nations. Although the country’s rank did not surpass its 17th position achieved in 2017 and 2016, this year’s team record of 145 points surpasses the previous best record of 133 obtained in 2016.

The Journey to IMO 2023
The six representatives to IMO 2023 were selected from a pool of participants through three events: the 25th Philippine International Mathematical Olympiad, the 2023 Mathematical Olympiad Summer Camp, and two team selection tests replicating the IMO assessments.
In the 63rd IMO held in Oslo, Norway, the Philippines won two bronze medals and four honorable mentions. This year, all the returning participants have won either a medal or an honorable mention in previous years. Dalida, in particular, carries an impressive record of winning medals in all past three competitions.
A Legacy of Excellence
The IMO, the most prestigious mathematics competition for high school students globally, first took place in Romania in 1959 with just seven participating countries. Today, it has expanded to include over 100 countries across five continents.
The Philippines’ consistent performance in the last seven Olympiads is a testament to the country’s dedication to fostering mathematical excellence among its youth. With this year’s record-breaking performance, the nation continues to make its mark on the global stage.
The 2023 IMO Team Philippines’ achievement is not just a victory for the team but a source of national pride. It is a testament to the potential of Filipino students and the quality of mathematical education in the country. The nation looks forward to more victories in the future as it continues to nurture its young mathematical talents.
