The “Big Four” Philippine universities – University of the Philippines (UP), Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU), De La Salle University (DLSU), and University of Santo Tomas (UST) – have enhanced their global standings by rising in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings (QS WUR) 2024, while the University of San Carlos (USC) celebrated its debut on the list of the world’s top performing universities.
The QS WUR, globally recognized as a premier resource for comparative data on university performance, disclosed these advancements on June 27, 2023 (June 28 PST). While this annual benchmark analysis is marking its 20th year of providing valuable insights into the performances of 1,500 top universities from 104 locations worldwide, this year also marks the Big Four’s 12th consecutive inclusion in the industry-leading QS WUR.
UP
UP maintained its top ranking among Philippine schools, climbing eight spots to 404th place from 412th in 2023. The national university system, which spans 8 autonomous campuses across the Philippines, earned an overall score of 27.6, standing out in the Employer Reputation category.
AdMU
AdMU followed suit, securing the 563rd spot, a significant leap from its 651-700 range ranking in 2023. The Jesuit-run university with campuses in Quezon City and Makati City excelled in Employer Reputation and Employment Outcomes.
DLSU
Manila-based DLSU climbed from the 801-1000 bracket in 2023 to the 681-690 bracket in this year’s rankings, demonstrating significant improvement. The university’s highest marks were noted in the Employer Reputation category.
UST
UST advanced to the 801-850 bracket from the 801-1000 bracket in 2023. The Dominican-run university earned its highest score in the International Faculty Ratio category. UST is the Philippines’ only QS 5-Star Rated university.
USC
In a noteworthy debut, the University of San Carlos entered the QS WUR in the 1201-1400 bracket, earning high marks for Employment Outcomes.

The 2024 QS WUR, the most comprehensive to date, reviewed 1,500 institutions across 104 locations. This year’s edition introduced three new indicators reflecting current higher education priorities: sustainability, increased employability, and international research collaboration. QS WUR is the first major world ranking to include sustainability as a core metric, placing a unique emphasis on employability and sustainability.
The rankings analyzed a whopping 17.5 million academic papers and took into account the opinions of over 240,000 academic faculty and employers. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) secured the top spot for the twelfth consecutive year.
These rankings emphasize the remarkable achievements and improvements of the Philippine higher education institutions in terms of quality, reputation, and international competitiveness. The country’s universities are continuously making strides and proving their mettle in the global educational landscape.
