From the Philippine Archipelago to the Arab States, the journey of the Filipino students who’ve been chosen to represent their country at the International Biology Olympiad (IBO) is a tale of determination, hard work, and passion for science. This July 3 to 11, the United Arab Emirates will host the 34th IBO, the world’s premier gathering of the brightest young minds in biology.
Four exceptional Filipino students are set to make their mark on this international platform after triumphing in the Philippine Biology Olympiad (PBO). Out of 55 promising participants from across the nation, these four students stood out and claimed the honor to represent the Philippines at IBO 2023.
These young science ambassadors are keen on adding to the Philippines’ IBO achievements, which currently stand at a silver medal, seven bronze medals, and six merit citations. So, let’s meet these talented Filipino students who are the country’s future life science leaders.
Chiara Bernadette Tan-Gatue of Saint Jude Catholic School heads the Philippine delegation to the IBO as the PBO champion. A two-time bronze medalist at previous IBOs, Tan-Gatue’s return for a third time underscores her exceptional aptitude and enthusiasm for biology.
Ayisha Ong, a fellow student from Saint Jude Catholic School, will be making her debut on the international stage. Despite being a newcomer, promising to bring a fresh perspective and youthful energy to the competition.
Breaking new ground, Andre Gerard C. Aw from New Life Christian Academy earned the title of First Runner-Up in the PBO and the opportunity to join the national team – a first for the school. He will carry with him the hopes and expectations of his fellow students as he steps onto the international stage.
Finally, Carlos Manuel C. Eusoya from Philippine Science High School Western Visayas Campus is another PBO victor and future IBO participant. Eusoya continues the proud tradition of Pisay-Iloilo scholars making their mark at the IBO, following in the footsteps of previous national delegates from the renowned science high school.
Each of these talented students has proven their merit on a national scale, and now they’re ready to take on the world at the IBO 2023. Organized by the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Education, the Olympiad offers an unparalleled opportunity to test their knowledge, showcase their abilities, and meet their peers from across the globe.
These four bright minds stand as a testament to the budding talent within the Philippines. As they gear up for the International Biology Olympiad, they carry not just the national flag, but the dreams and aspirations of their fellow Filipino students, proving that the future of life sciences in the country is in capable hands.
