Filipino gymnastics sensation, Carlos Yulo, has yet again made headlines as he seized the spotlight in the Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships that concluded on Sunday, June 18, in Singapore. For the second consecutive time, Yulo emerged as the best-performing male athlete, earning an impressive tally of three golds, one silver, and one bronze.
The competition started on a high note for Yulo on June 15, when he won his first medal of the tournament, a silver, in the Men’s All Around. This victory not only cemented his place in the forthcoming World Championships in Belgium this September, but it also made him the top qualifier in three key events – parallel bars, floor exercise, and vault.
The 23-year-old Filipino prodigy continued his winning streak on June 17, when he ruled the floor exercise. Known as his pet event, Yulo’s performance was nothing short of flawless, earning him a gold medal with an impressive score of 15.3 points. Yulo’s mastery in this event has been recognized globally, with a notable win in Doha, Qatar, last year, and a historic first Worlds victory for a Southeast Asian Filipino in Germany delivered in 2019.
The final day of the competition, June 18, was an arena of triumph for Yulo. The gymnast clinched two more gold medals in vault and parallel bars, and surprisingly also bagged a bronze in the horizontal bar. Despite a shaky start in the vault event, Yulo bounced back in his second attempt, averting Uzbekistan’s Abdulaziz Mirvaliev and Korea’s Jaeho Kim with a final score of 14.299.
On the parallel bars, Yulo showcased his strength and precision, earning a staggering 15.266 points. This impressive score outshone Japan’s Shinnosuke Oka and China’s Dehang Yin, who had to settle for runner-up finishes.
In an unexpected turn of events, Yulo also seized a bronze in the horizontal bar with 14.033 points, after just making the final cut. His exceptional performance came as a pleasant surprise, earning him his fifth and final medal of the championships.
Despite securing second place in the rings qualification, Yulo narrowly missed a podium finish, ending in fourth place in the finals.

The Filipino squad, including Yulo, Finnegan, and Kylee Kvamme, is now set to represent the country in the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Antwerp, Belgium in September. Their sights are set high as they hope to secure a place in the Paris 2024 Olympics.
