Filipino-Canadian American Idol hopeful Tyson Venegas has made it to the Top 20 of the 21st season of the singing competition and is vying for the Top 12 with a unique talent – playing the piano and singing.
The 17-year-old Venegas, who played the piano during the auditions which earned him a Platinum ticket that allowed him to skip the first round of eliminations on Hollywood Week, brought back his talent combination during his Top 20 performance broadcast on Monday, April 24, 2023, and added another flavor – singing his original composition, “180”, charming the judges and the audience once more.
Tyson Venegas has been praised by American Idol judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan for his songwriting skills which give him an advantage in the music industry, where many singers have to rely on other songwriters to write their songs. Venegas was also praised for his ability to connect with the audience and was even predicted to be on his way to the Top 10 of the competition.
After Venegas’ Top 20 performance, Perry remarked, “It was so cool. It was so great when you perform your own songs. I know what you stand for. I know what your values are. I know what your perspective is. I know where your heart is. And therefore, I can fall deeper in love with you, Tyson.”
Bryan added, “You’re 17 up here on ‘American Idol’ delivering messages for the world, helping people. You do a marvelous job at the piano. The way you’re able to hold the room. You are far beyond your years. Talented.”
Richie also praised Venegas’ skills as a singer-songwriter, saying, “When you are a singer-songwriter, you can write your future. That was a damn good song.”
His Hollywood round duet of Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now” with fellow Platinum ticket holder Kaylin Hedges also earned praises from the judges and goosebumps from judge Katy Perry who even posted photos on social media.
Last week, Venegas performed an impressive cover of Bruno Mars’ “It Will Rain” and although the judges noted that he played too much to the audience, losing his connection to the song, the performance sent him through to the Top 20.
Venegas and 19 other contestants will now compete to secure a spot in the Top 12, which will be revealed next week.

Venegas, who previously joined “The Voice Teens Philippines” season 2 under Team apl.de.ap but left the competition prior to the knockouts, is now asking for America’s votes to secure his spot in the Top 12.
Fans can vote for Venegas up to 10 times on each of the three voting methods available – americanidol.com/vote, the American Idol App, and by texting 25 to 21523. Voting ends at 6am PST/9am EST.
