The University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons make a triumphant return to the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Baseball Finals this Season 85, marking their first championship round appearance in the sport since Season 68.

In a remarkable show of perseverance and dedication and with renewed support from its community, the UP Baseball Team has broken its 17-year finals drought by securing a spot in the UAAP Season 85 Baseball Finals. The UP Fighting Maroons achieved a hard-fought 5-4 victory over Adamson University on Wednesday, April 12, 2023, at the UP Diliman Baseball Field.

Boasting an impressive record of seven wins and two defeats, the UP Baseball Team is now set to return to the championship round for the first time since UAAP the 2005-2006 season, when they emerged champions after battling the University of Santo Tomas.

Despite Adamson’s late-game surge, the Fighting Maroons managed to stave off their opponents and secure their spot in the Finals. The Soaring Falcons launched a massive offensive comeback in the eighth inning, narrowing UP’s lead to 4-5. However, the Maroons remained resolute, ultimately securing the final three outs needed to end the game.

UP’s offensive prowess was led by team captain and third baseman Mark Tuballas, who delivered a flawless three-for-three performance, including a triple and one run-batted-in. Centerfielder Darren Mayo also made significant contributions, with two hits on two at-bats and two sacrifice hits.

Head coach Anthony Dizer attributed the team’s success to their relentless hard work, unwavering commitment, and the steadfast support of their manager, Mike Asuncion.

Adamson’s defeat places them in a precarious situation, as they now hold a 5-3 record and face a must-win game against the University of Santo Tomas on Sunday to keep their Finals aspirations alive. De La Salle University, currently holding a half-game lead over Adamson, is set to face Ateneo de Manila University later in the day.

With their unwavering determination and exceptional performance throughout the season, the UP Fighting Maroons have shattered their 17-year finals drought. This monumental achievement sets the stage for an intense and riveting conclusion to the UAAP Season 85 Baseball tournament, inspiring hope and pride among fans and fellow athletes alike.

UP is no stranger to comeback feats in the UAAP. Just last year, the UP Men’s Basketball Team won its first UAAP Championship, ending a 36-year title drought. The team also made consecutive appearances in the finals within a year.
