The University of San Agustin (USA) and the University of the Philippines (UP) law schools are representing Southeast Asia at the 27th Stetson International Environmental Moot Court Competition’s (IEMCC) global rounds in Florida, U.S.A., this April.

USA Law was declared champion in the Stetson IEMCC Southeast Asia Regional Rounds (SEARR), while UP Law made the semifinals of the regional rounds, earning the opportunity to represent the region together with the National University of Singapore (finalist) and Singapore Management University (semifinalist).

As top teams in the regional rounds held virtually last January 30 to February 3, 2023, the Philippine universities have advanced to the global rounds taking place from April 13-15, 2023, at Stetson Law in Gulfport, Florida.

The USA Law Stetson team, composed of members from The Parliament, defeated the National University of Singapore in the SEARR final round. With a stellar performance, speakers Marco Giorgione Dava and Blessie Marie Cawaling, along with researchers Quemel Malte, Rency Joseph Ponce de Leon, and Descartes Roldan, secured their spot on the international stage. Cawaling was awarded the 2nd Best Oralist in the Preliminary Round, while Dava received the Best Oralist award in the Final Round. The team is coached by adviser Atty. Anfred Panes, The Parliament’s Prime Minister Jeff Earl Nuñez, and other USA-COL faculty and moot court alumni.

The UP Law Stetson Team also shone as semifinalists in the Southeast Asian Regional Rounds, winning all four matches in the preliminary rounds and emerging victorious in the quarterfinal rounds. The team, comprised of Isabella Angeline S. Blanco, Pauline E. de Leon, Toni Mae S. Sy, Joannah Angellie D. Vazquez, and Ignacio Lorenzo D. Villareal, was awarded the Overall Best Memorial award.

These two Philippine universities will face off against other qualifying teams from countries such as Brazil, China, Colombia, India, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Kenya, Korea, Nepal, Singapore, the United States, Uganda, and Ukraine. The prestigious competition showcases the skills and talents of law students from around the world, providing a platform for them to discuss and address pressing international environmental issues.

The Philippines’ University of Cebu Law won the 2022 Stetson IEMCC in Florida with the UP Law team also reaching the finals.

UP Law is a back-to-back champion team at the IEMCC SEARR and won Best Debater in the Florida global rounds.
