The Holy Week Cenaculo, a stage play re-enacting Jesus Christ’s passion and death, is being staged in Marinduque’s Moryon Arena, the first staging in 3 years since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Cenaculo 2023 directed by Danny Mandia, tweaks tradition and innovates the “bible story” with a live rendition of the last supper with Hesus portrayed by “Hari ng Pilipinas” 2021 winner Jerson Mendez, Herodes played by Antonio “Tres” Mangcucang, and Hudas is essayed by eye doctor Gwynn Jason Arevalo. The role of Pilate is played by former board member Juan “John” Fernandez while incumbent provincial legislator Dindin Opis-Mercado plays the character of Claudia.
The opening performance was staged on April 5, Holy Wednesday, with an encore scheduled for April 6, Maundy Thursday, and an April 8 Finale on Black Saturday.
The Cenaculo is staged at the Moryon Arena, the 50-million-pesos multi-purpose venue which hosted the PBA Legends and Marinduque Morions during Biyernes de Dolores prior to the annual Semana Santa.
The Marinduque State College Culture and Arts unit partnered with the Provincial Government of Marinduque for the first Cenaculo live performance three years after the pandemic. The ensemble came from the MSC Bachelor of Culture and Arts Education (BCAED) and went through the stage play’s preparation from January to April.
