Filipino World Champion gymnast Carlos Edriel Yulo is aiming to repeat his golden performance at the upcoming FIG World Championships to secure a berth in the Paris Olympics – while picking up experience and aiming for more medals at the Cairo World Cup and SEA Games.

The Southeast Asian gymnastics star is preparing for the scheduled series of high-profile events in his journey to the 2024 Olympics following his medal haul of 3 golds, 1 silver, and 2 bronzes from the Baku and Doha World Cup Series.

Yulo is no stranger to the challenges of the Olympics, having participated in the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. “I prepare for the Olympics the same way I prepare for other competitions, but it’s harder because I need to reach the targets I wrote down from the Tokyo Olympics before Paris 2024,” he said in Filipino during the inauguration of the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex Gymnastics Hall last March.

FIG World Cup Cairo

  • Carlo Yulo’s journey to Paris continues with the 2023 FIG Apparatus World Cup Series, the 4th and final leg of the World Cup series scheduled on April 27-30 in Cairo, Egypt, where he hopes to secure seeded places in the world championships.
  • Yulo is already seeded in the parallel bars after his golden performance in Baku, Doha silver, and Cottbus bronze.
  • The young gymnast is also aiming for another win in the vault following his Baku gold and Cottbus bronze in the event to guarantee his place in the world championships.
  • The two-time world champion revealed he is also looking to build a new routine for the floor exercise, his signature event which gave him the distinction of being the first Filipino winner at the FIG Worlds.

SEA Games Cambodia

  • Yulo will afterward represent the Philippines in the 2023 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, from May 6 to 9, to boost the overall championship chances of the Philippine team.

Asian Artistic Gymnastic Championships

  • Following the SEA Games, Yulo is set to defend his trio of Asian championship golds in the vault, parallel bars, and floor exercise at the 2023 Asian Artistic Gymnastic Championships scheduled from June 15 to 18 in Singapore.

FIG World Championships Antwerp

  • The 23-year-old gymnast’s campaign will culminate in the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Antwerp, Belgium, from September 30 to October 8.
  • With another world championship title in sight, Yulo also hopes to secure a spot in the Paris Olympics through a top finish in an apparatus event.

Yulo, the first Filipino gymnast to bag multiple medals in a single competition, already boasts historic golds from the 2019 and 2021 world championships, as well as a silver in the vault and a bronze in the parallel bars in the 2022 championships. As he sets his sights on the Paris Olympics, Yulo is determined to make history once more.
