These 2 Filipino dine-in destinations are among Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants

Chef Jordy Navarra’s Toyo Eatery gloriously bounced back this year with three recognitions in the 2023 World’s Best Awards for Asia, while Chef Stephan Duhesme’s Metiz gained its first-ever spot on the prestigious list released on March 28 in live ceremonies held in Singapore.

Toyo Eatery received the 50 Best Accolades in the 42nd spot, was named the Philippines’ Best Restaurant, and received the Flor de Caña Sustainable Restaurant Award for its team’s “work with local producers and artisans…, a focus on Filipino ingredients and a commitment to a low carbon footprint, making them worthy winners”.

The restaurant opened by Chef Jordy Navarra with his wife May in 2016 was named the Miele One To Watch in 2018, made its debut on Asia’s 50 Best in 2019 at No. 43, stayed on the list although it dropped one notch to No. 44 in 2020 amid the COVID-19 quarantine closure, continued to stay in the top 50 at No. 49 in 2021, dropped further to No. 94 in 2022, before bouncing back to its best-ever ranking at No. 42 in the 2023 edition.

“From victor of the One To Watch Award in 2019 to the winner of the Flor de Caña Sustainable Restaurant Award in 2023, Toyo Eatery has been on a meteoric rise to stardom through its platforming of its country’s produce and people,” went the citation of Asia’s Best 50.

World’s Best 50 recommends Toyo Eatery’s signature dish, the Bahay Kubo, an 18-vegetable salad named after a popular Tagalog children’s folk song, an adaptation of a popular street food pork barbecue dish, and the Tortang Talong eggplant omelet with banana catsup.

Entering at No. 48 as one of the seven new entries in the 2023 Asia’s 50 Best, Metiz is led by globetrotting Filipino-French chef Stephan Duhesme who returned to the Philippines and opened Metiz in 2019 to showcase all things Filipino, using all-local ingredients. The restaurant’s name refers to people of mixed Filipino and foreign ancestry, reflecting the chef’s own heritage and the meeting of influences in his native cuisine.

World’s 50 Best refers to Metiz as a “vibey new spot celebrating all things Filipino” where chef Stephan Duhesme “pools from the diverse influences and cultures across The Philippines’ rich history”.

Asia’s 50 Best recommends Metiz’s eight-course tasting menu, boasting dishes such as aged tanigue (mackerel) with fermented rice and mushroom.

Metiz’s ambiance according to World’s 50 Best:

“The look and feel: With a long, narrow, moodily lit dining room looking onto the open kitchen, Metiz has a cool, convivial feel that makes it perfect for date nights or fun nights out with friends. There is also outdoor seating nestled within the trendy Karrivin Plaza.”

Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2023 is topped by Le Du in Bangkok. The 10th-anniversary edition of the annual best-of-list by the World’s 50 Best is sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna and features the ranking of restaurants from 19 cities in 11 countries as screened by Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy, an influential group of more than 300 leaders in the restaurant industry across Asia.
