Filipino mother-daughter duo Maria Corazon Cabrera and Janine Cabrera Mendoza have helped set a new Guinness World Record for Multilingual Reading in Brussels, Belgium.

Cabrera and her daughter participated in the multilingual reading aloud relay held at the Bib Sophia library in Schaerbeek, Brussels to set a world record for “the most languages used in a reading relay”.

The participants read aloud a sentence from the book ‘Mister René’ by children’s author Leo Timmers in 65 languages, including Filipino.

The feat surpassed the previous record of 55 languages which was achieved by the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar in October 2022.

A jury of experts gathered at the Bib Sophia library in February 2023 to judge whether the language used while reading in the relay was correct, the Philippine Embassy in Belgium reported.

The Schaerbeek’s councillor for Dutch-language Culture and Education stressed the importance of one’s native language and expressed pride in the ethnic diversity that can be found in the city.

Cabrera said that it was an honor for her and her daughter Janine to have been part of the historic event and that they are proud that the Filipino language is recognized as an important part of the language diversity in Schaerbeek.

“We share this achievement with all Filipinos. We should be proud of our language and culture,” Maria Corazon Cabrera told the Philippine Embassy in Belgium in February 2023.

New world records set by Filipinos include the farthest flight undertaken on a hoverboard by flying electric car inventor Kyxz Mendiola and the most number of double under skips in 12 hours by “Skipman” Ryan Alonzo.
