The next generation of science and technology researchers at the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) is currently being prepared for future responsibilities through the Research and Innovation Skills Development for Early-career Researchers (RISE) program being piloted this February.
Fifteen selected NRCP associates and regular members with diverse backgrounds from different divisions such as humanities, engineering, pharmaceutical, health science, education, and social sciences, have undergone research training on February 16 and 21 with the last sessions scheduled on February 23, 2023.
The researchers are being trained using the following 6 new NRCP RISE modules:
- Module 1 doing research
- Module 2 contextualizing literature
- Module 3 research ethics
- Module 4 data collection and analysis
- Module 5 conducting impact assessment
- Module 6 models of research collaboration
The first session opened with a recorded message from newly installed NRCP executive director Dr. Bernardo Sepeda followed by a briefing on the background of the activity by NRCP specialist from the Technical Capacity Development section Mary Charlotte Fresco. The first two modules on doing research and placing research in context were presented by Ricardo “Jheck” Salunga last February 16 at the NRCP auditorium.
The next installment on February 21 featured Jayvee Tamondong tackling ethics and data collection.
NRCP Rise modules pilot-testing would conclude on February 23 with input from observer Dr. Genevieve Pilar of the Research and Development Committee from NRCP Division 1 (Governmental, Educational, and Internal Policies). Chief Administrative Officer Dr. Geraldo Petilla would then close the pilot run sessions.
The NRCP RISE pioneer batch members are expected to run RISE for the incoming associate members to become full and regular members. Meanwhile, NRCP under the auspices of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is going to have its general assembly this March along with the induction of new members.
NRCP offers public online science lessons through the BRITER Program website.
