Philippine press freedom film “A Thousand Cuts” featuring Nobel-winning Filipino journalist Maria Ressa has won the 2022 News and Documentary Emmy Awards.
The internationally acclaimed work by Filipino-American filmmaker Ramona Diaz, which aired on American public broadcast service Frontline in January 2021, won the Emmy for Outstanding Social Issue Documentary at the 43rd edition of the prestigious annual awards for broadcast journalism given by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS).
Diaz’s film on the story of the first Filipino Nobel Peace Prize winner who risks her life for the sake of press freedom in the Philippines is among the 64 Emmy winners that NATAS chairman Terry O’Reilly describes as “broadcast journalism at its best, reporting that values fact over fiction, accountability over advocacy, and that champions the advance of truth in the interest of the communities we all serve”.
The Emmy-winning feature-length documentary follows Ressa – described by Frontline as a “prime target of then-Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on the press” – and how her Rappler news organization responded. “The documentary offered a powerful look at the implications for democracy when press freedom is threatened and disinformation flourishes on social media,” Frontline adds.
Ressa and Rappler have been documenting Duterte’s violent war on drugs in the Philippines as well as leading fact-checking efforts on fake news published on the Internet.
