Filipino teachers have set up free food pantries inside schools across the Philippines to feed hungry students.
Inspired by the Maginhawa Community Pantry initiative that sparked a nationwide movement among Filipinos, the classroom pantries initiated by teachers are stocked with food essentials, snacks, and even school supplies to aid underprivileged pupils in the country.
These educators have also gone viral on social media for spreading kindness and going above and beyond the call of their profession to help students in need.
The teachers’ community pantries, which provide free food and snacks to the youth, can be found in schools in Batangas, Manila, Quirino, and beyond.
Balas Elementary School
Arlon Pascual of Balas Elementary School in Talisay, Batangas decided to initiate a “School Pantry” in his classroom to feed students who have no school allowance to buy snacks or food.
Diodol Elementary School
A teacher’s classroom pantry in Aglipay, Quirino is providing free school supplies and food to hungry students.
Rafael Gutierrez of Diodol Elementary School used his own money to start his initiative called the “Classhome Pantry” to respond to the needs of his pupils who go to school hungry due to their families’ lack of resources amid the still ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
Gutierrez’s pantry is stocked with free school supplies and food items such as snacks, canned goods, and other essentials for third-grade students of the school.
San Juan National High School
Sammy Ursua of San Juan National High School in Manila is teaching students to give back to others.
The “Classroom Pantry” of Ursua has inspired a student to donate and help out fellow students who don’t have enough school allowance to buy food.
Ursua has shared that he has been giving snacks to needy students even before the Covid-19 pandemic hit and has decided to continue his initiative to help more pupils.
Ursua’s initiative also takes inspiration from the original Maginhawa Community Pantry tenet of “Magbigay ayon sa kakayahan, kumuha batay sa pangangailangan” (Give what you can, take only what you need).
Filipino teacher Noel Sales, an assistant professor at the University of Batangas, recently raised funds for needy students’ school fees and expenses.
